... The ancient village ...
Levanto was an important commercial port during the 13th century, as it was part of the Republic of Genoa, one of the Maritime Republics.
Even today, crossing the city streets of Levanto, it is possible to admire what is left of its history.
The municipal Loggia, which today overlooks Piazza della Loggia, was once the center of trade in Levanto, as it was directly in the harbor.
A little further on, we come across the building that today is called L'Ospitalia del mare, which in the past served as a warehouse for businesses.
In front of the Loggia it is possible to see then, Casa Restani, a typical merchant house, still decorated with mullioned windows.
It is worth to talk about the castle and the walls of Levanto, which served as a defense for the town, which could be attacked in any moment, because of its mercantile importance.
The castle of Levanto was built by Malaspina family on a raised part of the town, so that it could dominate the village but also the coast and the sea.
It saved the lives of citizens, during an attack by the Pisans, who destroyed the village.
The walls were surrounding the whole area around the castle for defensive purposes and it is still possible to see a part of it, with its Clock Tower, which is remained intact over time.
The famous church of Sant’Andrea is the most fascinating here in Levanto, with its white marble facade alternated with local black stone and the magnificent rose window that dominates the square; it was built during the XIII century and it is the place where the municipality of Levanto and its loyalty to the Republic of Genoa was born during that century.
