Hotel Nazionale a Levanto

In the Levante part of the Ligurian Riviera, stretching from the Cinque Terre to Portofino, Levanto is situated in a deep natural bay, protected by the Mesco promontory and fringed by a wide beach of fine silica sand. A ring of hills surrounds this deep valley, hills which are covered by olive groves and scattered with a multitude of villages and hamlets.
This parallel nature, both marine and hill, and the cultural differences between the two, is at the core of the dual nature of the town, and this is reflected in its cuisine with its fish and vegetable dishes. The Italian Mountaineering Club (CAI)'s path number 1 starts in Levanto and follows ancient tracks to Portovenere, on the eastern tip of the gulf of La Spezia, along a high coastal route offering panoramic views at every turn.

Monterosso, the first of the Cinque Terre towns, is just past the Mesco promontory, and the other towns are laid out along the path of the blue sea route. Excursions on foot, by train and by boat offer wonderful views of the rocky coast plunging directly into the sea, of the tiny towns perched on the cliffs or hidden in the folds of the hill ridges and lush vegetation as it dips down into the sea, hanging on desperately to scarce soils almost washed away by the waves. Many sports are possible here too, particularly
